EV CHARGER FAQ’s:

How many panels would I need to charge my EV?

In the same way that petrol cars use L per 100km’s, EV cars use KWh per 100km’s. While it will vary depending on your vehicle, most EV’s can travel roughly 6km’s on 1KWh. Estimating that the average Australian drives around 50km a day, you would need to be able to produce 8KWh each day. By the standard of most panels today you would need at least six panels to achieve this. However, when installing solar panels, it is highly recommended to maximise the number of panels within your budget and available roof space. By doing so, you can effectively compensate for lower energy generation during winter or overcast days. Additionally, this ensures sufficient coverage for your home's energy usage both now and in the future.

Whats the difference between a Level 1, 2 and 3 charger?

Electric car chargers are divided into levels based on how fast they charge, with level 1 being the slowest, up to the fastest at level 3.

  • Level 1 - uses a standard 10amp charger and is the slowest rate available. With a capability of adding about 12 km’s per hour, it would take 10 hours to add 120kms.

  • Level 2 - the most sought after choice for EV owners, it is a specialised EV charger that needs to be installed by an electrician. It can then add between 40 to 130km’s per hour. Some EV manufactures require a level 2 charger to be installed where your car is stored for it to stay in warranty.

  • Level 3 - is rapid charging using public charging points, such as the Tesla SuperCharger. They can add up to 720km’s per hour to your vehicle and are more commonly utilised for long distance travel. However not all models will be able to fully utilise a level three charger, and they may cause wear on your vehicles battery.

Why install an EV Charger?

  • Economic Benefits- After the initial installation cost, using your solar power to charge your EV means you save on electricity costs and fees from charging stations. You also never have to pay for fuel again!

  • Convenience- Having a home EV charger means you all but eliminate the queues at charging stations, and ensures that your car always has enough charge to get you where you need to be.

  • Smart technology - Smart EV chargers are able to recognise changes in your electricity production (ie; on rainy or cloudy days) and adjust their charging rates accordingly. This means your electricity will go to the places you need it the most, whilst still charging your vehicle throughout the day.

  • Environmental Footprint- Many customers consider their impact on the environment a big motivator for switching to solar power and Electric Vehicles.

  • Charging Speed- Most home EV chargers can fully charge your vehicle in only several hours.

  • Compatibility- Most EV chargers are compatible with a wide variety of EV models and manufacturers, meaning that if you have a second EV of a different model, you can charge it from the same point.

  • Battery Life- Being able to keep the battery charged will improve its longevity, by prolonging it’s ability to hold charge.

  • Property value - Installing an EV charger can be seen as a huge bonus to the value of the property, making it more appealing to a wider range of buyers.
