Solar Power FAQs:

How does solar power work?

Solar power harnesses the energy of the sun to generate electricity for your home or business. Here’s how it works:

  1. Energy Collection: Solar panels absorb sunlight and convert it into direct current (DC) electricity.

  2. Energy Conversion: An inverter then transforms this DC electricity into alternating current (AC) electricity, which is what powers your home or business.

  3. Energy Usage: During the day, you will use your own clean, free solar power first. A smart meter then accurately calculates any power you import from or export to the grid, ensuring your bill reflects these adjustments correctly.

Often, your solar panels will produce more electricity than you need. When this happens, the excess power is sent back to the grid. In return, you receive a feed-in tariff (FIT) of approximately 3-10 cents per kWh, depending on your energy provider. This results in a credit on your electricity bill, offsetting a portion of the electricity you draw from the grid.

Adding a solar system can significantly reduce your power bill, especially if you run high-energy appliances during daylight hours.

To maximise your savings and minimise reliance on the grid, consider adding a battery to your solar system. This allows you to store excess power generated during the day for use during evening peak rates and into the night, and can also safeguard you against blackouts.

What incentives are available for solar?

There are two incentives that are applied.

FIRSTLY, is the government’s Small-scale Technology Certificate program (STCs) which SUBSIDISES THE UPFRONT COST for you. The criteria you need to meet:

  1. System is less than 100kw

  2. You use products approved by the Clean Energy Council (CEC)

  3. It is installed by a Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) accredited electrician like Eco Sparky

Consider STCs like a “credit” for doing the right thing for the environment. They are “sold“ on an electronic platform after your system and paperwork is complete and approved. Australia’s largest polluters are forced by the government to “buy” these STCs to offset their carbon footprint. Assigning your STCs to Eco Sparky as your SAA installer allows Eco Sparky to give you an affordable price and means you don’t need to worry about any hassle or paperwork, as the incentive is applied to your invoice directly as a point of sale discount and Eco Sparky handles the rest.

SECONDLY, is the Feed In Tariff (FIT) which is where your electricity retailer pays you in credits on your bill for any additional electricity your system creates that your household has not used, and then exports it back to the grid. Eco Sparky is happy to give you tips but you should shop around here to ensure you get the FIT rate and general kWh usage rate that is best for your circumstance.
